Do you write music or make sound art? Do you work creatively with music and sound as art?

Our members create new media art, orchestral music, operas, educational music, experimental pop, place music, chamber music, performance, vocal music, sound art, electronic music, film music, noise, scenic music, religious music, jazz, game music, new traditional music and improvised music, to name a few.

We welcome all professional composers and sound artists to apply for membership in Norwegian Society of Composers.

Costs

The membership fee is NOK 165 per year. In addition comes a service fee corresponding to 4 percent of the TONO royalty settlement (from the previous year), but with a minimum of NOK 1650, - and a maximum of NOK 5495, - for 2025 for the services the association provides its members. Membership fees and service fees are collected each members’ settlement from TONO. Members without a settlement that exceeds the minimum rate for membership fees and service fees will be invoiced. Membership criteria

§2 of the Articles of Association – Admission of members – reads as follows:

a) Composers who can document professional creative artistic practice, regardless of working method, may apply for membership. Members must live in Norway or be Norwegian citizens living abroad. Members must also have a contract with TONO or another Board-approved management organisation for performance and sound fixation in Norway.Professional creative artistic practice can be documented in one of three ways:

  1. Documentation of education: Bachelor's degree, or higher, in composition or sound arts.
  2. Documentation of activity in the art field that has been externally assessed by peers or a competent body. The requirement is at least five of the following: Professional public performances, releases, screenings, commissions, or scholarship awards/grants.
  3. Documentation of works: Either at least four works, or works with a total duration of at least 40 minutes, as well as a CV and a reflection note on how the applicant works as a composer.

b) Applications for membership are decided by the Music Committee and presented to the Board for information. Rejections based on processing pursuant to section 2a, items 1 and 2, may be appealed for procedural errors within three weeks and processed by the Board. Rejection based on an assessment pursuant to section 2a, item 3, is a discretionary assessment and cannot be appealed.

c) If the applicant is a member of another country's composers' association, the applicant must renounce his/her right to vote and any rights to financial benefits in his/her former association.

d) In special cases, membership may be granted to artists who can contribute to promoting the association's activities, even if the conditions in §2a) are not met. Such membership is decided by the Board. The Board shall obtain advice from the Music Committee before making a final decision.

e) The Board may issue further guidelines on the admission of members. These must be made known to applicants and others.
